Women of the Gonzaga family: power, culture and dynastic continuity at the Ducal Palace in Mantua
Visiting the Ducal Palace in Mantua means travelling through more than four centuries of political, artistic and cultural history of Renaissance and modern Italy.
All too often, however, this story has been told almost exclusively through the male figures of the Gonzaga dynasty: marquises, dukes, military leaders and diplomats.
This guided tour offers a different and complementary perspective, focusing on the fundamental role of the women of the Gonzaga family, silent but decisive main characters in maintaining the prestige and stability of Mantua for over four hundred years.
Not only Isabella d’Este, undoubtedly one of the most famous women of the Renaissance in Europe, but also mothers, wives, daughters and regents who, through marriage alliances, political skills, economic management and refined cultural patronage, contributed to the splendour of the court of Mantua for over four hundred years.
